Currently at Community College W, a significant number of students are being required to take developmental reading and writing courses that may be unnecessary based on the results of a single placement test. Many of these students may not actually need remediation, which is costly and time-consuming. Their scores, instead of reflecting ability, may indicate that they are not good test takers, were unprepared for the test, or lacked understanding of remedial courses. Since previous studies indicated that GPA may be an accurate predictor of success, the researcher created a pilot study to determine if there is a correlation between success in English 101 and high school GPA. Students who participated in the pilot were recent graduates (within 2 years) who were allowed to waive their developmental course requirements and go directly into English 101. Pilot study participants were selected for recruitment based on (a) proximity to the placement test cut-score for English 101, (b) unweighted, cumulative high school GPA and (c) high school cumulative English GPA. Once students were identified, they were contacted by phone, as well as being sent a letter, to discuss the pilot study---specifically the risks and benefits of waiving remediation. The pilot study was conducted during the 2013 -- 2014 academic year and consisted of 75 participants. The findings of the study reveal that there is, indeed, a correlation between GPA and success in English 101. The raw data consisted of 75 total participants, 65 of whom passed their credit-level course with a C or better. Though the sample was smaller than anticipated, the results are promising. As a result of this study, the college is currently in the process of making the use of GPA as a placement tool a permanent policy.
