The purpose of this study was to discover the ways in which social media became a part of the lives of a group of third culture kids (TCKs) and third culture individuals (TCIs) and to find out how their daily communication habits through social media influenced their identity development. By looking specifically at changes to personal identity development, social identity development, relational identity development, and collective identity development, it was possible to understand the importance and impact of social media on TCKs.

520 $a In this qualitative study, 23 participants, ages 16-22, had either previously attended the Alliance Academy International (AAI) of Quito, Ecuador, or were attending the school at the high school level and were interviewed regarding their experiences as TCKs and TCIs while highlighting their adaptation and participation in social media.
520 $a The methodology included a questionnaire based on Marcia's Identity Stages and informal interviews with each of the participants in the study. Observations of Facebook use were made of individual pages as well as group interactions of the participants through a closed Facebook group page called "TCK Identity Development." Identity development questions unique to TCKs were discussed on this page.
520 $a The results showed that social media did impact the identity development of TCKs in both negative and positive ways. Through the use of grounded theory, the beginnings of a theory was made in order to provide insights useful to the parental and caregiving adults in the lives of TCKs to help them chose ways to maximize the benefits of social media use while avoiding the major pitfalls to their identity development. Additional research ideas were offered to provide more ways in which the TCK transition between adolescence and adulthood can be further studied.
