Due to the limited civil rights acknowledgements provided to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) community, the formalization of same sex families remains ambiguous. In a culture where family formation by the LGBT population is unknown, what processes do same-sex couples go through to cement their relationship and can those skills and resources be transferred to new couples? The research population that was recruited for this study consisted of LGBT couples who reside in a metropolitan area. This action research study was aimed at developing a mentoring component in the LGBT community to facilitate and strengthen the necessary skills that promote successful families and was performed by using a research methodology called cooperative inquiry originated by John Heron and expounded on by Peter Reason. This insider in collaboration with insider (Herr and Anderson, 2005) research methodology created an opportunity to develop change in the LGBT community. The use of individual interviews with participants began the dialog of how the families were formed. The iterative process of reflection refined the focus of the action research study to address the familial support structures for LGBT and provide a concrete representation of what families and individuals are still needing. While the projected outcome of this study was the development of a mentoring program, what actually occurred was the development of a sample tool that allows LGBT members to identify their supports and what they still need help with.
