It appears that the empirical literature supports what both the Apostle James refers to in the Biblical text and what Diana Fosha's theory refers to: that engaging in suffering can produce good outcomes. "Engaging" seems to entail an appraisal of the suffering (i.e., naming it as such; choosing a healthy perspective), the expression of certain emotions (i.e., reaching the core state), and a receptive relational context (i.e., not suffering alone). Whereas James focuses on the resulting perseverance and maturity and Fosha focuses on the resulting relief and calm, the literature focuses on increased quality of life and well-being. It can be argued that what James and Fosha propose actually contribute to and expand on the concept of well-being to which the literature refers.
