The comparative findings of this dissertation are based on an examination of a representative sample of 1700 estar progressives drawn from contemporary spoken, journalistic, and literary source material in Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, and Catalan.

An examination of the data from the nine corpora of this study, which takes into account temporal, aspectual, contextual, and non-aspectual considerations, provides persuasive quantitative and qualitative support for the following major conclusions: (1) The estar progressive is distinctive functionally from the simple or finite verb form, possesses semantic characteristics of its own, and endows the contemporary Ibero-Romance languages with multiple, diverse, and shared aspectual and non-aspectual meanings. (2) The estar periphrasis shows a clear tendency to combine morphology and meaning in order to reveal the aspectual senses appropriate to the value of the construction. (3) The progressive construction is predominantly and essentially concerned with temporal reference and temporal perspective. The meanings of the progressive span the time continuum from the moment of speech through unlimited temporal extension, from progressive to continuous to habitual. (4) Estar periphrases embrace several stages of the grammaticalization continuum simultaneously, and contribute meanings which range from the fully lexical to the completely grammatical, from locative to durative to progressive to habitual, with additional non-aspectual nuances of meaning such as non-durativity. (5) Estar progressives are multi-functional in nature, exhibiting similar uses in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan. (6) No major differential restrictions on use of the progressive are identified within the study. The progressive has generalized to encompass the meaning of habituality in all three languages, and exhibits an extensive combinatory potential, with few lexical restrictions. (7) Portuguese rivals, and in some respects, surpasses, Spanish in the distribution and use of estar progressives among the Romance languages. (8) Language, register type, the estar periphrasis, context, and influence from English all play a significant role in terms of the relative frequencies of tense distribution of estar progressives.
