Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 1998.
This dissertation examines the syntax and semantics of adverbs and adverbials in Russian, with emphasis on a wordform I call bipartites , and on the distinction between V(erb)-Adverbs (so-called manner adverbs) and S(entence-Adverbs. Bipartites are formed from the univerbation of a prepositional prefix and a nominal root. An example of this type of formation is vmeste 'together', which consists etymologically of the preposition n 'in; into' and the PREP of the noun mesto 'place', which combine to mean roughly 'in the (same) place'.

Bipartites are of interest in that they play a range of syntactic roles, despite the fact that they have traditionally all been termed adverbs by Soviet/Russian grammarians. In the course of the dissertation I show that bipartites in fact are used as adverbs (both S-Advs and V-Advs), but also function as indeclinable adjectives (occurring in attributive, post-copular, and predicate nominal constructions), and are often the crucial semantic component in a wide range of expressions---they are subcategorized for by certain verbs in certain meanings.

I show that the neutral (linear) ordering of verb and V-Adv is reversed in English and Russian, but I demonstrate that in both languages, if there is an adverb that may function as both a V-Adv and an S-Adv, the ordering in parallel between the languages. An adverb in pre-verbal position tends to be interpreted as an S-Adv, while one in post-verbal position tends to be interpreted as a V-Adv.

The backbone of the dissertation is a syntactic taxonomy of various types of adverbials in Russian. I examine adverbials functioning as intensifiers and quantitive adverb(ial)s; V-Advs and S-Advs; and adverbials of time, place, reason, and goal. The taxonomic analysis provides the framework upon which I base my analysis of bipartite syntax.

The interaction of word order, adverb orientation, and scope effects determines how a given adverb is to be interpreted. By subjecting a range of adverbials to syntactic analysis and by noting the behavior of bipartites of various types, I arrive at a taxonomy of Russian adverbials as well as a syntax of bipartites.
