Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Phoenix, 2015.
Although there are 764,495 international students studying in the United States who contributed $22.7 billion to the American economy and with China the top country of origin for the 3rd year in a row (Institute of International Education, 2012), there is a lack of knowledge regarding factors or motivation influencing Chinese students' decision to study in the U.S. The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to identify common factors that influenced Chinese students' decisions to obtain an advanced education in the U.S. The central research question was: Why do Chinese students want to study in the United States? The participants were 20 Chinese students who came from the political, social, and educational climate of the People's Republic of China, who were studying in the U.S., and who lived in or near College Park, Maryland during the study. Data were collected from individual semi-structured interviews with participants. Five major themes emerged in this study: American culture benefits foreign perceptions of education in the U.S.; increased personal wealth increases demands for educational freedom; Chinese test performance does not indicate education quality; Chinese culture clashes with students' desire for self-actualization; and an education in the U.S. is considered an immigration stepping stone. Recommendations were made to administrators, U.S. and Chinese policy makers, university professors, Chinese parents, Chinese students, and researchers.
