Recent interest in how brain function affects mathematical achievements has brought into focus the role of working memory and attention. This research used a different approach by combining two paradigms: brain training to increase activity in parts of the brain and the power of human-computer interaction (HCI). HCI allows children to take advantage of their experience in the real world. The research goal for this study was to develop a system to train children to increase working memory and focus attention independently and quickly to increase their motivation to learn in the classroom. In this study learning behavior is examined so examined learning behavior in the classroom by building an awareness among teachers and students of the role of working memory.

Two brain training applications and physical manipulative HCI interaction interfaces were developed. The latter was compared to an existing traditional interface (mouse) to interact with the application. The new interfaces used the natural way of a user's interaction with the software and provided rich visual feedback. Brain-computer interface (BCI) is embedded with the brain training system to read the child's attention state in real time.

Eighteen children with low mathematical achievement and attention disorder were tested. Data were collected using pre/post task completion and the NASA Task Loading Index. R was used to analyses the data, Analyses involved several statistical significant tests to compare conditions investigated in the study. Results showed significant improvement in task completion compared to the traditional method and significantly lower overall subjective workload. All children and teachers reported that they preferred the new way to interact with the application over the traditional way the brain training system is a flexible, noninvasive, drug-free, child-friendly way to reduce symptoms associated with attention deficit disorder.
