Bullying is a critical problem that adversely impacts students, school culture and the overall learning environment (Sampson 2010). Bullying is not limited to elementary students and impacts students in older age groups and across gender and ethnic categories. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in the perceptions of middle and high students regarding bullying and school culture. The sample consisted of 553 secondary students attending selected middle or high schools. The survey instrument used to collect data was the Student Perceptions of Bullying and School Culture Survey was a forced-choice Likert scale survey instrument developed by the researcher. The study investigated students' perceptions regarding bullying and school culture held by students in demographic groups of middle and high school students, female and male students and African-American and Caucasian students on the categories of Policy, Culture and Response and overall survey items.

The study investigated perceptions regarding bullying and school culture held by middle and high school students, female and male students and African- American and Caucasian students on the categories of total survey, Policy, Culture and Response. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, which included frequency counts, percentages, means and standard deviations. Cronbach's alpha was computed for each of the subscales and total survey. Independent t-tests were conducted to complete statistical hypothesis testing. The difference between the mean scores for middle and high school students was statistically significant in terms of the total survey and the 3 subscales of Policy, Culture and Response. The findings indicated that middle school students had a more favorable perception of bullying in their school than high school students in terms of Culture and Response. The difference in the mean scores of African-American and Caucasian students were statistically significant in regard to Culture and Response subscales.
