This project examined improving reading comprehension scores in adult English language learners (ELLs) with the use of graphic organizers, specifically the KWL chart and concept mapping. The study took place over eight weeks in a Midwestern community college within developmental reading courses for ELLs. This quantitative study examined whether or not the use of graphic organizers improved reading comprehension achievement scores in adult ELLs taking the ACT Reading Comprehension test. A significant difference was found between the control pre- and post-groups, indicating that learning did occur and regression did not in the control group. Furthermore, there was a larger difference with the intervention pre- and post- groups versus the control group, indicating the intervention did improve reading comprehension scores. The study also examined whether or not gender was a factor in reading comprehension achievement scores with the application of the intervention. The findings show there was a larger gain difference between the male intervention pre- and post-groups than the female intervention pre and post groups. The recommendations are that future studies be conducted on diverse, adult students who could benefit from intervention strategies, particularly graphic organizers with diverse males with low reading comprehension scores and other interventions for diverse females with low reading comprehension scores.
