Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Davis, 1996.
This dissertation proposes an explicit semantics for Spanish aspectual verbal inflections, namely the perfective and the imperfective. Operating under the assumption that verb stems denote the time intervals they are true of, the perfective morpheme is interpreted as a function which selects the closed intervals in the denotation of the verb stem it attaches to, while the imperfective is interpreted as a function which selects the open intervals in the denotation of the verb stem it attaches to. Evidence for the proposal includes entailments concerning the classical notions of perfectivity and momentaneity and cooccurrence restrictions between the morphemes in question and adverbial modifiers (en 'in', por 'for', de$\...$a 'from$\...$to', entre$\...$y, 'between$\...$and', cuando 'when' and mientras 'while' phrases). An ontology of eventualities and the different aktionsarten in Spanish is also presented, with particular emphasis on naturally ended or telic eventualities and the stative verb class. This study contributes to a formally explicit semantics of verbal aspect in Spanish as well as general studies of aspect.Subjects--Topical Terms:
