Reflexive pronouns in the Romance languages perform a wide array of seemingly unrelated functions, appearing in decausatives, passives, verbs describing mental and emotional states or events, reflexiva tantum, as well as several construction types cognitively related to the direct reflexive construction. 520 $a Romance reflexive constructions fall into three major types: the direct reflexive, its variants, decausative reflexives and passive reflexives. Reciprocal, dative and benefactive reflexives form a radial structure whose center is the direct reflexive prototype. The prototype encodes a situation, itself a variant of the prototypical transitive situation, in which agent and patient components of the subject referent are maximally individuated. Romance reflexive marking patterns are in various stages of an evolution that correlates with cross-linguistic patterns whereby a phonologically weightier and/or morphologically less-bound reflexive marker replaces a lighter and/or more-bound form to encode the prototypical direct reflexive construction.
520 $a The direct reflexive radial structure is linked to the remaining major reflexive categories through a grammatical chain which emerges as a reflexive construction occupies synchronic space with grammaticalized forms based on it. Decausative reflexives arise when the low subject-agency of certain direct reflexives is perspectivized and applied to semi-autonomous change-in-state situations. Reflexive verbs of emotion are decausativized transitive verbs. Also perspectivized is the exclusion of external agency that is implied by the semantics of direct reflexives, leading to a productive use of reflexive pronouns with some verbs as markers of surprisal-adversative evidentiality. Passive reflexives emerge as reflexive pronouns begin to mark the backgrounding of subject agency with non-autonomous events and states. Intransitive and copulative verbs may also be passivized, defined as the backgrounding of the understood subject. The definiteness of the understood subject, determined by context and pragmatic considerations, results in a personal or a generic reading. Generic passive reflexives often convey deontic or dynamic modality.
