Grammatical models usually provide stable descriptions of the syntactic rules that they treat. They have only limited success in treating variation. Grammars of Russian make reference to similar, but nevertheless different semantic classes of predicates in discussing the operation of various syntactic rules. The goal of this dissertation is to account for variation in Russian syntax and its interaction with predicate semantics within a uniform framework.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Textual counts are used to examine the behavioral patterns and function of three rules of Russian grammar and to determine what intrinsic properties of processes and lexemes make them compatible.
520 $a Predicates existentialize or individuate arguments. They function existentially to the extent that they treat an argument as a property attributed to a time and place in a world, asserting the entity's presence, and ignoring the entity's unique properties. They individuate to the extent that they treat the argument as a referentially autonomous individual to which a property is ascribed.
520 $a Predicate classes form a lexical hierarchy of individuation. "Inversion" predicates are of low intrinsic individuation, while "agentive" predicates are of high intrinsic individuation. "Intransitive" predicates are intermediate between these two classes.
520 $a Rules of Russian syntax express the existential or individuating function of propositions. The lexical hierarchy interacts with these syntactic rules. At the extremes of the hierarchy syntactic reflexes are determined almost automatically, while the middle regions of the hierarchy are characterized by greater variation and greater sensitivity to context.
