Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 1980.
This dissertation is primarily concerned with Russian impersonal sentences of the type vetrom uneslo lodku 'a boat got carried away by the wind'. The unique syntactic characteristics of this type of impersonal sentences (hereafter referred to as ITI for "impersonal transitive with instrumental") are instrumental case marking on one NP (e.g. vetrom), the neuter singular ("impersonal") form of the verb (e.g. uneslo), and the absence of subject-verb agreement. Despite the fact that the ITI has been widely discussed in linguistic literature, a number of problems relating to it remain unsolved. There is no general concensus in the literature on the exact meaning and use of the ITI construction. There is widespread disagreement over the status of the instrumental NP; it has been classified as a subject, an object, a hybrid subject-object, and an instrument. Different attempts have been made to account for the impersonal form of the verb in traditional descriptive terms, as well as within the framework of transformational-generative grammar, generative semantics, and theories of voice.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter 1 of this dissertation supplies the background to the problems involved in analyzing ITI. Passive, middle, and other impersonal sentences related to the ITI are examined. An extensive corpus of data is provided as a full representative sampling of ITI usage. The major semantic, syntactic, and morphological properties of the ITI are listed, as well as the major problems connected with an analysis of ITI.

In Chapter 2 I survey the work of traditional and modern grammarians and linguists whose writings include discussions of the ITI. Here various accounts of meaning, synonymy relations and usage are compared and contrasted; this leads to a discussion of two of the characteristic elements in ITI, the instrumental NP and the verb. The shortcomings of several essentially taxonomic proposals concerning the instrumental NP are pointed out; I then attempt to utilize the theory of Case Grammar to account for case marking in ITI and corresponding personal sentences. Finally, I discuss proposals concerning the relevance of voice to an analysis of ITI and related passive sentences.

The review of literature continues in Chapter 3 where I examine the works of a second group of investigators whose writing, in non-traditional frameworks, focusses on the ITI problem in particular. Two lengthy analyses of ITI written in a generative semantics framework are discussed in detail. Next I survey proposals calling for inclusion of zero syntactic subjects in the deep structures of ITI to account for surface structure and meaning. Several fragments of transformational-generative grammar are discussed which purport to provide underlying structures and derivation of the ITI surface pattern.

In the fourth and final chapter I present my own views on the syntax, semantics, and use of ITI; I suggest that a complete characterization of ITI must be based on multiple parameters at different levels of analysis. These include "empathy", theme/rheme structure, and the distinction between thetic and categorical judgments. I propose that the instrumental NP in ITI functions essentially as an adverbial modifier of the predicate. I conclude the dissertation with a summary of my main findings.
