520 $a The central phenomenon in this qualitative study is the servant leadership of Monsignor Bornemann and his impact in his Church, the faithful, and his community. This study involved telling the story of more than just an individual, for it also details the experiences of a growing Catholic Church in Berks County and its journey to establish itself to best serve and meet the needs of the faithful. To tell the story of this leader, data was gathered from a number of sources, including documents, photographs, letters, books, pamphlets, and newspaper stories. A story emerged as the research was analyzed, and re-told as a narrative.
520 $a Bornemann's influence on the growth of Catholic churches, schools, and other institutions has left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church in Berks County. He was also a well-respected civic leader who helped to establish a hospital, cemetery, orphanages, and a tuberculosis sanatorium. This research identifies several characteristics of servant leaders, including prioritizing the needs of others, empowering followers, forming relationships, and helping followers to form a vision to pursue their dreams. Monsignor Bornemann demonstrated these attributes and his servant leadership qualities are in contrast to the traditional style of hierarchical leadership.
