The purpose of this study is to investigate, from the practitioner's perspective, how expressive arts therapy benefits the aging population. More specifically, the study sought to describe: 1)How licensed practitioners, working in different contexts, perceive the process, effects, and benefits of using expressive arts therapy with the aging population; and 2) To what extent and how do practitioners use integrative approaches with their clients. An adaption of grounded theory methodology including consensual coding, as developed and described by Strauss and Corbin (1998), was implemented in this study.

There is a lack of research focused on the use and effects of expressive arts therapy with the aging population. This study is an expansion of previous research, which has tended to focus on individual modalities, in examining integration of expressive arts modalities. A grounded theory was developed from the data of the interview transcripts of the 10 participants. The therapists of this study identified the term "integrative" in several senses. In the work with elderly clients the therapists' expressive arts interventions integrated: multiple modalities, multiple approaches to psychotherapy, and multiple means of psychological processing of feelings and cognitions. From the practitioners' perspective, the interviews revealed the positive effects of using expressive arts therapy interventions with elderly clients. The therapists of this study reported that their multimodal arts-based interventions fostered expression and communication, improved therapeutic connection, promoted holistic engagement, elicited memories, improved self-awareness, provided brain stimulation, increased liveliness, supported the aging process, calmed clients, and assisted with the grieving process.
