There is a growing body of knowledge within health care that holistic care, particularly spirituality, is a significant dimension of human wellbeing. The primary focus of care in nursing homes, assisted living and long term care facilities is often physical and psychological needs. Without an environment of holistic care, elderly residents are bound to fall short of their wellness potential. This project presented a rationale for addressing the spiritual needs of the elderly and proposed an adaptation of General Electric's change acceleration process (CAP) as a framework to incorporate spiritual care into a nursing home. The topics of the literature review focused primarily on integration of spiritual care into an existing organization and implementing spiritual care in clinical processes by adapting the CAP model. A comprehensive literature review using specific exclusion/inclusion criteria, was conducted and used as a primary data source for this project. The data was used to develop a rationale in order to adapt the CAP model for incorporating spiritual care into a nursing home. Gaps in the research were identified. Data was obtained for this project from the past 15 years. Evidence supported that nursing homes could improve the quality of life of their patients through incorporation of spiritual care. The discussion focused on incorporating spiritual care into a nursing home. The conclusion presented limitations of this project and suggestions for future work.
