The present study is a quantitative research design, using descriptive statistics to investigate the frequency of the selected idiomatic expressions and analyze data from various sources and groups of participants. The present study is composed of four main components. In the first part, idiom samples were collected from various genres and sources. The selected idioms were entered into a corpus which provided frequency counts. In the second part, graduate students who spoke English as a second language completed a survey to assess their knowledge of the frequent idioms identified by the corpus. In the third part, native speakers completed a survey to investigate how frequently they used the selected idioms in their everyday life. In the fourth part, the idioms in the three selected idiom textbooks were examined to investigate their idiom frequency.

After examining the frequency counts in the COCA, the top 50 frequent idioms were identified to be used in the rest of the study. The non-native speaker participants' data reflected that only nine participants were able to choose the correct definitions for half or more than half of the 50 idioms, and the participants got 19 out of 50 definitions correct on average. As for native speakers, they reported that the idioms were heard more frequently than they were used in their daily life, and five idioms were concluded to be the most frequent idioms in terms of how often they were heard and used. Lastly, none of the three selected idiom textbooks included more than three of the 50 frequent idioms used in this study, and none of those idioms overlapped in two or more textbooks. Among the three idiom textbooks, only one idiom, dressed to kill, overlapped in all three of them, and it had a frequency count of 63 in COCA.
