This dissertation analyzes how the victim emerges as a narrative and discursive subject in testimonies of the Colombian armed conflict. In the last years of the past century and the early 2000s, victims burst into the discursive scene of the country's half-century-long war and have remained in the foreground since then. They had never been in that position before. Historical and political accounts of the conflict traditionally set as its protagonists those who held power (armed and political). The turn of the century brought on a new figure that would become a key to the understanding and politics of the armed conflict: the victim. The victim emerged as an unavoidable object for political, legal and historical discourses about war. More importantly, it appeared as a new subjective possibility, a position from which it was possible to speak, to give an account of oneself and assume political agency as never before in Colombia. The dissertation is aimed to establish what forms of agency testimonies allow victims to achieve, focusing on three cases: 1) Testimonies collected by NGOs, State institutions and academic institutions, whose purpose is to make victims visible. 2) Testimonies of the Union Patriotica, a leftist political party that was exterminated by military and paramilitary groups. 3) Testimonies of kidnapping, a practice used most notoriously by leftist guerrillas.
