520 $a Chapter 1 studies what causes switching costs in the Chilean retirement-investment market and how these switching costs affect consumer behavior. This is done by distinguishing between two sources of switching costs. One is the cost of facing a bureaucratic system whenever enrollees want to switch between options in their choice set. The other is the cost involved in analyzing the financial information available is the prospectus of the pension funds. I use a structural choice model to estimate the distributions of switching costs, as well as consumer's preferences over pension fund attributes. The main findings are that most of inertia is explained by the cost of analyzing financial information, though there is significant variation across the population: switching costs increase with age, decrease with income, and are not affected by gender.
520 $a Chapter 2 builds on Chapter 1 and studies the competitive and welfare implications of being able to target interventions to each source of switching costs. It is shown that eliminating the cost of analyzing financial information increases consumer surplus eight times more than eliminating the cost of enrollment. In addition, eliminating the cost of analyzing information increases consumer surplus 8\% more than eliminating both sources of switching costs, because firms are willing to decrease their prices to compete for new enrollees and induce switching away from their rivals.
520 $a Finally, Chapter 3 studies how the implementation of mandatory disclosure of information through a centralized mechanism (a website), may result in firms coordinating their pricing strategies through their participation in this mechanism. It is shown that after the introduction of the website, margins increased 10\% on average, and dispersion of margins decreased significantly in some markets while it was not affected in others. These two results together suggest that this information mechanism intensified coordination rather than competition.
