The purpose of the study was to determine the perceptions of recreational Scuba instructors as to the adequacy of current training modules pertaining to the prevention of panic during recreational dive training, the perceived need for a change in the way it is taught and their own perceptions of ability to recognize potential panic in students. A 20- question survey was developed by the researcher and sent to Scuba Dive retailers with educational departments across the United States and its territories via the Internet. One hundred and one responses were returned. Following analysis using both descriptive statistics and analysis of variance it was determined that although over 75% of the respondents felt they personally had received adequate personal training with the current model, and during their professional level training 88.2% of those at Instructor level and 74.2%, those at Assistant Instructor/ dive control specialist levels felt adequately prepared. The majority (65.3%) answered that they felt training should be "a mandated ongoing training that builds on knowledge from Open Water to the professional levels." ANOVA analysis bore this out. In addition it was determined that the way Instructors perceive potential panic changes with age, with the younger ones perceiving the more overt clues while older ones appear to note more subtle ones. ANOVA of Vital Clues by age for Confined Water had a p value of .879 against a critical value of .05, while for Open Water training the p value was .94 against a critical value of .05 indicating there is a difference by age in what vital clues are looked for.
