Thesis (Psy.D.)--University of Hartford, 2015.
The following dissertation examines the potential of coaching as a supplemental or alternative therapeutic modality for treatment-resistant men, particularly for the application to Asian-American men. The dissertation provides an in-depth analysis of coaching and addresses how Asian-American men's unique cultural attributes (e.g., gender role socialization / notions of masculinity, generally negative help-seeking attitudes towards conventional methods of counseling and psychotherapy, etc.) may, to some extent, be navigated through the use of coaching, a more goal-oriented, solution-focused approach to professional help. In addition, the dissertation will attempt to extrapolate the themes of coaching that may appeal to Asian-American men and explore the idea of how coaching (or elements thereof) may be folded into current therapeutic frameworks or potentially utilized as a freestanding therapeutic modality. Due to the paucity of research concerning the effectiveness of coaching, a research design and methodology is presented for future application. The proposed research design includes a plan for evaluating the efficacy of coaching for the Asian-American male population. Lastly, ethical concerns, limitations, and future research are addressed.
