"Space We Claim" explores elements of Washington D.C. public parks and open space through photography, documentary film and personal writing to reveal the fundamental principles of public space in urban lifestyle and social communities. The project considers the individual as a basic component to the larger population and addresses the necessity for interaction, definition and utilization of public land. Some parks that are featured include, The National Mall, Tidal Basin, Dupont Circle, Marvin Gaye Park, Rock Creek Park, Meridian Hill Malcolm X Park, and Shaw Skate Park. The project highlights recreation, pastime, leisure activities such as skateboarding, chess games, music and dance, drum circle, and picnics. Steve Coleman, co-founder of Washington Parks and People, narrates the film.
