Malingering tends to be a commonly encountered phenomenon for those who work in the forensic context. There is much research available regarding malingering among criminal populations, and offenders have been described as egocentric, rebellious, and antagonistic with little desire for change. For psychologists who conduct forensic assessments, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) and Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) are two of the most commonly used measures that comprise a battery of assessments. When the question of malingering arises, the need for accuracy in its detection is necessary as it may be the difference between necessary sanctions and the genuine need for psychiatric treatment. As such, two different malingering scales developed for the MMPI-2 and PAI were developed specifically to be used with forensic populations. For the current study, these scales, the MMPI-2 Criminal Offender Infrequency scale (Fc) and PAI Negative Distortion scale (NDS) were analyzed for accuracy and level of predictability for malingering among a forensic sample.

Results indicated that both scales yielded a significant difference between pre- and postconviction offenders. These results suggest that individuals who are in the preconviction process of adjudication are more likely to malinger psychiatric symptoms compared to those who are postconviction. Additionally, results indicated the Fc scale yielded a greater amount of variance than did the NDS. The variance suggests that malingering an be explained by the level of adjudication. Furthermore, the Fc scale yielded a slightly higher level of predictability of malingering than did the NDS. The results of the study support the use of both scales in detecting malingering among forensic populations, though the Fc demonstrated a slightly higher level of accuracy. Limitations and suggestions for future research are also provided such that the opportunity for inclusion of each scale into its respective measures may be provided.
