The purpose of this study was to examine the information source preferences, basic need satisfaction, and self-determined motivation of adult golf league participants in Canada. Exploring the preferred information sources utilized by current league members served to determine the marketing channels most utilized and can be used to inform communication strategies to improve participant recruitment efforts. Meanwhile, understanding the relationship between basic psychological need satisfaction (competence, relatedness, autonomy) and the behavioral regulations (autonomous or controlled) with which golfers are motivated to pursue league membership can help to improve participant retention.

A cross-sectional, non-experimental design was employed to measure adult golf league participants' information source preferences, basic need satisfaction, and self-determined motivation toward golf leagues in Canada. An online survey was distributed through four provincial golf governing bodies to collect data between January and March, 2014, resulting in 426 useable surveys. The sample of older adults (Mage = 62.08 years) was predominantly male (61.1%, n = 256) and White (95.7%, n = 399), with an income of $125,000 or higher (22.9%, n = 88).

Data analyses resulted in several significant findings. Firstly, significant differences existed in basic need satisfaction based on participant characteristics (sex, years in the golf league, skill level). Basic need satisfaction also significantly explained variance in autonomous regulation after controlling for years in the league and handicap index. This model did not significantly explain variance in controlled regulation.

Results from a principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that four factors (Public, Social, Web, Personal) were present to explain information source utilization preferences by golf league participants. The golfers preferred both personal and social information sources prior to golf league participation. Finally, information source utilization was significantly related with each of the basic need satisfaction levels. Furthermore, information source utilization significantly explained a moderate amount of variance in autonomous regulation, while also marginally explaining variance in controlled regulation to pursue the golf league.

Conclusions largely supported theoretical underpinnings, but also offer unique contributions to the literature surrounding adult sport participation behaviors. Golf directors should promote positive word-of-mouth among members to recruit new league participants. Once members have joined the golf league, directors can attempt to foster the three basic psychological needs in order to encourage motivated and sustained members.
