Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 1997.
Henry James revamped the Florentine story of a Shelley-worshipper trying to get Claire Clairmont's papers and moved it to Venice. The new setting greatly enriches the resulting tale of The Aspern Papers, and he uses this unique illusionary atmosphere to develop the story and the characters through masks and the inherent duplicity of the fallen Queen of the Adriatic. Besides the physical guises, false names, and hidden motives, the greatest mask is that of the unreliable first person narrator who tells the story from his point of view forcing the reader to decipher the facts. Henry James uses Venice to its limit be reflecting it in Miss Juliana Bordereau's character--so much so, that she can be seen as Venice personified. The author also spins off a military assault angle by introducing the equestrian statue of Bartolommeo Colleoni that reverberates throughout narrator's quest to seize his "spoils.".
