This study used participatory action research within an intervention model that melded creative and artistic expression with clinical treatment plans to engage twelve severely emotionally disturbed (SED) teen females ages 12 to 19. The method emphasized communication, empathy, and efficacy through a four-phase process. The purpose was to explore (1) Can the arts and creative expression as part of a wraparound wellness model support SED youth in defining values and visualizing their roles in the community? And (2) Can engagement in arts and creative expression as part of a wraparound wellness model support aspects of communication, empathy, and building efficacy?

The youth are designated as participants, and the three activity therapists and one case manager involved are called co-researchers. Phase 1 comprised an introduction to expressive arts and social-emotional learning tools and focused on the youths' definitions of values and identities. Phase 2 investigated the information gained through Phase 1. Data were recorded through 1:1 interviews, focus group sessions, and researcher and co-researcher observations. In Phase 3, art functioned as a mode of sharing the perspectives of the young people with adult members of the Anchorage community through an art show. Data were collected through researcher and co-researcher observations and field notes. Phase 4 was an evaluation of the project's impact through 1:1 interviews, focus groups, and assessments.

Supported by 1:1 and group interviews, observations, and verbal descriptions of art making, this project found that using art and creative expression can reveal individual and group value systems that highlight internal and external conditions that facilitate prosocial interactions. The participants emphasized (1) feeling accepted, (2) increased confidence, (3) feeling empathy from others and towards others, (4) interacting with peers, (5) humor and play, and (6) having a structure through directed activities as the salient experiences of this study. The transformative learning process supported mental health professionals in understanding how art making can benefit the individual and a community through attuned mentorship and spaces for engagement that accentuate play, communication skills, empathic understanding, and efficacy.
