The pedagogical foundation of Suzuki's method is the concept of the "Mother Tongue." When children learn their native language, they hear words and phrases many times and, eventually, they are able to repeat them and absorb their meaning. Suzuki's method applies this same process to the language of music. When children learn music, they should listen to "good music" repeatedly through recordings or live performances. Children first learn to speak a language with simple words, and this ability leads to speaking complete sentences, followed by reading and writing. In music, a child begins with simple skills, and develops and accumulates increasingly complex skills.

The Suzuki method encourages memorization from the earliest stages. Children can easily and precisely memorize their music because of the emphasis on listening and repetition. The method also emphasizes musical environment. Teachers and parents should create an environment that encourages beautiful music, and they should support a student's abilities and opportunities. If they push too hard and compare them to other students, they will not improve and enjoy the music.

This thesis will examine the philosophies of the Suzuki Piano method and analyze the presentation of melody, rhythm and note reading from the introductory stages through the completion of Book 1, offering comparisons to other piano methods.
