Chinese churches and pastors are at a crossroad. For the past several generations, most Chinese pastors and preachers mainly utilized topical sermons in their preaching. Usually they used a lot of stories to support each point of their topical sermons. Some of the stories were good because they came out of their personal experiences of encounter with God, hardship and/or victories in their ministries. Some of them were bad because they were just stories without any relationship to the text at all. Recently it comes a generation of young Chinese preachers who want to do expository preaching. They are taught how to do exegesis and sermon outlines. But very few of them are taught how to use illustrations. The Overseas Born Chinese like stories and learn from stories. Thus many Overseas Born Chinese audiences find expository sermons boring and without light for their daily living. This project is to search for the effective usage of illustrations in expository preaching among the Overseas Born Chinese congregations in North America.

In this project, I listened to at least two sermons from thirteen popular preachers/pastors to research how they used illustrations. I evaluated their effectiveness of using illustrations and learn from them how to use illustrations effectively, especially in expository sermons. I also analyzed the source of their illustration and the way they collected them. Then I integrated what I learned from the findings into my sermons. I delivered five expository sermons to a focus group of ten members from my church for evaluation. I integrated the findings, evaluation and recommendations in my future preaching and teaching ministry in Homiletics to bring light into expository sermons and to preach expository sermons which connect with the audience and their daily life.
