Chinese older adults are rapidly increasing in the US with research evidence suggesting high rates of depression and suicidal ideation; yet, there is insufficient research investigating risk factors for depression in this population. Among the identified risk factors, or vulnerabilities for the maintenance or exacerbation of depression is a tendency to ruminate. Several conceptualizations of rumination have been proposed, but very little research has examined how the relationship between ruminative types and psychological health outcomes may differ among ethnic groups.

Main goals were to examine cross-cultural differences in psychological health, the use of two different conceptualizations of ruminative coping, and the role of ruminative coping on negative psychological health outcomes to fifty-seven Chinese and twenty-nine of non-Chinese medically frail older adults who were clients at Northern California Adult Day Health programs. Results indicated that there is a cross-cultural difference in psychological health where Chinese older adults had more severe depression, suicidal ideation and negative mental health in comparison to non-Chinese older adults. Results also indicated that the link between rumination and perceived stress with psychological health varies according to ethnic group.

In particular, two conceptualizations of rumination---ruminative response style and stress reactive rumination---and their subtypes were investigated. While the use of ruminative response style---including the sub-factors brooding and reflection---did not explain worse psychological health in Chinese older adults, the analyses for stress reactive rumination offered an explanation for why Chinese older adults had worse psychological health.

Consistent with hypotheses, a subset of ruminative response style did predict suicidal ideation and negative mental health for Chinese older adults. Taken together with perceived stress, three subsets of ruminative response style did predict negative psychological health. These results suggest that ruminative response style should identify the two sub-factors in tandem rather than separately.

Results from this project have important implications for rumination and culture literatures. This study also illuminates the need to further study the definition of coping responses as it pertains to the mental health needs of Chinese older adults, to develop culturally responsive service outreach recommendations.
