Research on psychotherapy outcomes has identified facilitative factors and therapist characteristics that contribute to the development of strong therapeutic relationships, of which therapists' relational skills and capacities seem most important to the development of a strong working alliance (Lambert & Bergin, 2001). Given this, it then follows that clinical psychology training programs ought to focus on training beginning therapists to develop relational skills and capacities that serve to facilitate effective therapeutic relationships. The purpose of the present study is twofold: (a) to briefly summarize the literature identifying and describing the characteristics of strong, facilitative therapeutic relationships that lead to positive therapeutic outcomes in order to underscore the importance of therapists' relational skills, and (b) to present three avenues, as supported by the literature, through which clinical psychology training programs can facilitate the development of high level relational capacities in beginning therapists.
