Filipino Americans are continually bypassed and omitted in psychological research and publication (Cordova & Acena, 1983; Nadal, 2010), even as Filipino Americans have become the third largest Asian American population in the U.S. and continue to maintain one of the fastest growth rates in the nation (Hoeffel, Rastogi, Kim, & Shahid, 2012). Research on colonial mentality within the Filipino American community has recently emerged that suggests a strong correlation with depression (David, 2008; David & Okazaki, 2006a). However, no such research has been conducted examining colonial mentality's correlation with anxiety. The current study examined relationships between colonial mentality, acculturation, self-esteem, and collective self-esteem with anxiety within the context of the Filipino American experience. Participants included 154 self-identified Filipino Americans who completed online measures of self-esteem, collective self-esteem, colonial mentality, acculturation, and anxiety.

Results suggest that self-esteem was the independent variable with the highest significant correlation with anxiety. While three manifestations of colonial mentality, Cultural Shame, Physical Characteristics, and Cultural/Ethic Inferiority, also had significant correlations with anxiety, they were not as strong as self-esteem. Based on previous research, it may be that colonial mentality has an affect on self-esteem, which then has a direct and significant correlation with anxiety. Explanations for these findings are discussed. Furthermore, additional findings, clinical implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
