The global crisis of refugees, driven by both natural disaster and internal war and conflict, has created a unique challenge for mental health professionals. Clinicians are called forward to gain a better understanding of the mental health concerns specific to refugees. We must have a better understanding of the unique way that individuals assign meaning to their refugee status and the cultural context that influences this meaning making. It is also important for mental health professionals to understand the potential for pain and loss created through the process of forced migration. Millions of Iraqis have been displaced over several decades, making it crucial to understand their experience of cultural loss and how it impacts their mental health needs.
