Body attitudes were investigated in self-injurers, in those with disordered eating, and in those with co-morbid presentations. The attitudes being studied were body shame, body insensitivity and body investment. Participants (N=182) were recruited from public online support forums, and self-identified as experiencing disordered eating, self-injury, or both. Broadly, elevated body shame was related to the presence of an eating disorder, accounting for 14.7% of the variance in group membership, F(2, 174)=14.944, p<.001. eta2=.147; lower overall body investment was related to the presence of self-injury, and accounted for 8.1% of the variance, F(2, 174)=7.67, p=.001, eta 2=.081; and elevated body insensitivity was found in the mixed group, and accounted for 7.3% of the variance, F(2, 174) = 6.895, p=.001. eta 2=.073. Together, findings suggest that eating disorders and self-injury present different patterns in body attitudes, and that these patterns are evident in the mixed group, as is an elevated level of pathology across body attitudes.
