In the years after the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, an unprecedented amount of Latino immigrants entered the United States. Large numbers of these individuals entered without legal papers, forming a rapidly growing group of "undocumented" workers who exist in the shadows without legal protection and experience a difficult life marked by pervasive poverty and discrimination. In this paper, I apply transnational social field theory and draw from multiple disciplines to understand the "social space," major challenges, and most potent resources for undocumented Latino immigrants in the United States. Finding that religion is a powerful source of identity that unites the largest number of undocumented Latinos, I narrow my focus to consider specifically how evangelical Latino churches and organizations aid in the protection, advocacy, and advancement of undocumented Latinos in the hostile American context. I conclude by synthesizing my findings in practical suggestions for the life and ministry of evangelical churches in this community.
