Intergenerational relationships between immigrant parents and their American-raised children highlight a number of acculturation issues immigrant families face. This study compared perceived levels parent-adolescent conflict among 218 college students of Caucasian or Asian American background. Asian Americans reported higher levels of acculturation related conflicts compared to the Caucasian non-immigrant and Caucasian immigrant groups, as well as higher levels of general conflict compared to the non-immigrant Caucasian group. Cultural variables of acculturation, ethnic identity, individualism and collectivism were examined as predictors of intergenerational conflict, with ethnic group membership and individualism accounting for statistically significant amounts of the variance in conflict. When cultural variables were examined within the Asian American group, orientation to mainstream culture emerged as having an inverse relationship with acculturation related conflicts. Ways that cultural variables moderate the relationship between conflict and internalizing symptoms were also explored, along with clinical implications of findings.
