This dissertation examines the evolving identity and culture of the Marian assembly in pre-revolutionary Toulouse to better understand the affective formation of secular clergy and their culture in France during the ancien regime. The assembly (or l'Aa) comprised a select group of sodalists who were chosen for their dedication to the acquisition of virtue through a more intensive practice of piety and apostolic ministry. Founded in France at La Fleche circa 1630, the group was later established at Paris, whence it spread to several other cities in the kingdom, including Toulouse in 1658.

The study explores the contributions and limitations of Jesuits in forming the identity and spirituality of the assembly and also the group's evolution to accommodate changes in the political and ecclesial landscape in France before the expulsion of the Jesuits from the realm in 1762. Above all, this work considers friendship as the constant and integrating theme in the formation of assembly confreres, one expression of the wider development of group identities among elite groups in early-modern France.

This study relies chiefly on Toulouse assembly membership lists, records of minutes, notes of spiritual conferences, accounting books and inventories, literature describing pious practices, histories, and the Toulouse group's correspondence with other assemblies in the kingdom and overseas that are preserved in the archives of the Society of Jesus at Vanves, a Paris suburb.

The first part of the dissertation examines the interior dynamic of the assembly and its outward expression. Chapters therein describe its identity and mission, its prayer and clerical identity, the affective formation of the student confreres and their rite of renewal, and their practice of ministry. Chapters in the second part of the dissertation focus on relations with Jesuits and elders and describe the critical moment of the assembly when developments in the shift in patronage from Jesuits to elders culminated in the group's survival at the Jesuit expulsion. Throughout this study the assembly is depicted in terms of the importance it placed on developing strong and nourishing relations among young men who were preparing for service in the Church, bonds they termed sainte amitie, which went to the heart of their identity as confreres and as clerics.

The work aims to offer a new perspective on a uniquely male form of early modern spirituality, grounded in the ideal and practice of friendship, which derived from---and found expression in---the devotional and apostolic practices of the assembly.
