Caring is at the heart of the nursing practice. Socialization into the nursing profession begins in nursing school, and nursing faculty members are nursing students' first role models for how to approach, communicate with, and provide care to patients. Faculty members provide support, teach, encourage, and nurture nursing students. However, faculty members can also be the source of confusion, stress, and despair for nursing students when caring behaviors are absent. This basic qualitative study explored new nurses' perception of caring and bullying behaviors they encountered during nursing school. Using recorded semi-structured interviews, eight new nurses were asked to describe instances of caring and bullying they experienced in nursing school, how the behaviors affected them or made them feel, and how they responded to the experiences. Participants were also asked how the caring and bullying experiences have influenced their practices. Participants remembered vividly behaviors of both caring and bullying. These participants are emulating the positive behaviors they experienced, and are consciously striving to not continue the examples of negative, bullying behaviors. Watson's theory of human caring and Bandura's theory of social cognitive learning were the theoretical frameworks for this study. Implications for nursing education and recommendations for future research are included.
