Research on children's spirituality has mostly focused on older children. Yet this research suggests that the spiritual life is forming at a deep level throughout the early childhood years. Framed in Westerhoff's (2000) understanding of Experienced Faith, this qualitative study explores how preschool children make meaning of their faith experiences. The study took place in a midwestern Christian early childhood center preschool class where twenty-five children heard a biblical story told three different ways including a storytime, Young Children & Worship (a form of Godly Play), and one led by the teacher. Children were asked to respond through drawing pictures and share their personal understandings of the story with the researcher. Data were collected through video-recorded classroom observations, children interviews, and documents. Data collected demonstrated that children engaged in verbal and non-verbal behavior, utilizing an integrated approach including language, play, story, and relationships to make meaning of their faith experiences. The findings confirm that children are capable of making meaning of their faith experiences and exhibit significant insights and understandings of faith. The church and those involved in the field of Christian education are encouraged to embrace the young child's faith experience where the children can holistically explore the biblical story, aided by intentional experiences where meaning can be constructed, and engage in informal and formal interactions with other "faithing selves" where the faith of both the young child and the adult is nurtured and grows.
