The term complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is based on the understanding that certain interventions are not widely taught in U.S. medical schools or generally practiced in U.S. medical facilities. This understanding has not changed, but acupuncture is now considered integrative since a variety of medical providers are learning some aspects of clinical acupuncture to address pain, stress, and sleep challenges. Most accredited medical acupuncture programs include auricular acupuncture training. The auricular protocol for addiction has been used professionally by counselors for decades. The purpose of the study is to determine frequency, efficacy, and value of acupuncture as an adjunct treatment for addiction and posttraumatic stress among counselors. An Auricular Acupuncture Assessment Survey Instrument was used obtain demographic variables and quantitative data about frequency, effectiveness, and value of the NADA auricular acupuncture protocol. Results showed that a greater proportion of National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) certified participants use the NADA protocol for addiction and posttraumatic stress than the proportion of NADA-certified participants that do not use the NADA protocol for addiction and posttraumatic stress. Results also show that a greater proportion of NADA-certified participants report that the NADA protocol decreased their clients' unpleasant emotions and increased clients' perceived control than the proportion of NADA-certified participants who report that the NADA protocol very rarely or never decreased their clients' unpleasant emotions and increased clients' perceived control. Finally, results showed that NADA-certified participants agreed that there is value in the NADA protocol more than non-NADA-certified participants.
