The current study examined the effects of a 12 session meditation and mindfulness group on the variables of depression, anxiety, and mindfulness. A total of 30 incarcerated males residing in San Francisco County Jail #5 Psychiatric Sheltered Living Unit (4B) participated in the meditation and mindfulness practice groups and were administered the Beck Depression Inventory 2nd edition (BDI-II), the Beck Anxiety Inventory 2nd edition (BAI-II), and the Five Faucet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) prior to, and following, completion of the 12 session groups. Paired samples t-tests were performed to analyze the data. The practice of meditation and mindfulness was found to have a large effect size across the three variables, supporting the hypotheses that meditation and mindfulness practice correlates with lower levels of depression and anxiety, and increases in levels of mindfulness for incarcerated males with a currently diagnosed mental illness.
