The violence and militancy in the Niger Delta region is borne out of the lack of human and infrastructural development in the region. Despite the relative peace and stability currently enjoyed as a result of the Amnesty program, there are still concerns about a return of violence in the region. One way to address these concerns is to ensure that ex-agitators are able to transition to peacetime activities including living wage employment, entrepreneurial activity, and civic activity after their education and training. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify whether the ex-militants' education and training has helped them transition to sustainable peacetime activities in the region. Schultz and Becker's human capital theory and Lederach's view of the peacebuilding theory were used as the theoretical frameworks of the study. Snowball sampling was used to identify and recruit a total of 14 ex-militants, program administrators, a former political leader, an instructor, and a government official for the study. Data were analyzed using content and thematic analysis. Findings revealed that while some of the ex-militants have used the education and training to transition to peacetime activities, more employment opportunities are needed for the program graduates. Participants also indicated a need for infrastructure development in the region. The results of this study may help the Nigerian government enhance youth education and empowerment programs, and focus on the eventual employment of program graduates. The social significance of these recommendations may help prevent a return to militancy and violence and promote greater social and political stability in the Niger Delta region.
