In Mediation and Ethics in Late Medieval English Literature, I argue that the motif of the social mediator as it appears in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English texts allowed writers to explore ethical questions about the nature of personal morality, responsibility for others, and good social life. The figure of the responsible mediator is a powerful intercessor who intervenes on behalf of a favored or pitied subject who is in legal or political jeopardy, to help secure mercy, justice, and a good social position. The ethical dynamics of social mediation have often been overlooked by scholars because the act of spiritual intercession has been seen primarily as a conventional aspect of the Christian devotional imagination, while advocacy and patronage in political and social life have been interpreted in terms of their pragmatic aims, with little attention to the ways in which the concept of the Christian cosmos as a social order inflected social themes such as advocacy, friendship, patronage, guidance, and lordship. I have focused my work on a variety of narrative and lyric texts representing mediation in a variety of genres, including the Marian intercession narrative "St. Theophilus" in the South English Legendary, Chaucer's courtly romance Troilus and Criseyde, the visionary account A Revelation of Love by the anchoress Julian of Norwich, several short poems from the early fifteenth century, and Thomas Hoccleve's The Regiment of Princes . To situate these texts within ethics discourse, I have analyzed them in terms of the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. To provide a historical context for my readings, I have discussed them in light of Christian devotional history and late medieval English political history. My study draws on the methodologies of Robert W. Hanning, who explores mediation as a social concept, and J. Allan Mitchell, who studies ethics in late medieval didactic literature. My study reveals that the varying treatments of mediation in Middle English literature promote a range of ideas about the ideal social order and the self as an ethical agent.
