The thesis of this dissertation is that contemporary soteriological and ecclesiological discussions fail to address adequately, if at all, the ontological aspects of the believer's relationship with Jesus Christ. Continuing a centuries old debate, particularly seen in Protestant Evangelical discussions, the continued soteriological emphasis on the distinction between forensic justification and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in sanctification continues to form seemingly insurmountable barriers to ecumenical reconciliation. Furthermore, emphases on individual salvation and church growth strategies, for example, have eclipsed a vital, organic understanding of the church. This too contributes to what appears to be an apathetic acceptance of the fractured condition of Christ's body, which is the church. Consequently, despite tremendous efforts by many, ecumenical dialogue remains, by and large, at an impasse. This dissertation examines the concept of ontological reality as it relates to union with Christ, and soteriological and ecclesiological consequences of that ontological union.

The thesis of this dissertation is that contemporary soteriological and ecclesiological discussions fail to address adequately, if at all, the ontological aspects of the believer's relationship with Jesus Christ. Chapter 1 addresses preliminary issues such as a statement and elaboration of the thesis of this work, methodology, presuppositions, and important definitions. The first portion of chapter 2 presents support for the contention that ontological concerns played a fundamental role in the church's soteriological and ecclesiological reflections during the early years of doctrinal development, which concerns persisted up to the late medieval period. The second portion presents support for the contention that a significant shift away from these ontological foundations occurred during the late medieval period and subsequent rise of Modernism that has had significant negative consequences for contemporary soteriological and ecclesiological discussions. Chapter 3 examines several significant streams of thought in contemporary scholarship that argue for a more substantial role for ontology in theological reflection. While these discussions, for the most part, are found primarily in technical, specialist literature, they nevertheless have important contributions to make to contemporary soteriology and ecclesiology, demonstrating that scholars from a variety of traditions are attempting to restore ontological foundations for theological reflection.

After a brief examination of related contemporary literature, Chapter 4 discusses significant New Testament passages in order to demonstrate the importance of recognizing ontological implications of these texts as they relate to soteriology. Chapter 5 proceeds in a similar fashion with respect to ecclesiology. The fmal chapter summarizes the primary arguments and conclusions of the dissertation, provides concluding remarks, and briefly identifies significant soteriological and ecclesiological issues for study that the dissertation does not address but are directly related to the central theme of the ontology of union.
