Education reform efforts in the United States, mirroring global trends, have sought to impose a technical-rational, bureaucratic, and top-down system characterized by standardization, accountability, compliance, and sanctions. Despite the moral and emotional nature of teaching and learning, teachers' perspectives, feelings, concerns, and beliefs have been largely absent from the education reform debate. The variables that attract individuals to the teaching profession, keep teachers motivated, and contribute to the formation and evolution of their professional sense of self are multifarious and complex. This phenomenological study utilized semi-structured interviews with 24 educators to examine their perceptions of current trends in education, school culture, professional growth, views of the profession, teacher advocacy, and teacher morale and motivation. The purposeful sample drew from the 2012 cohort of State Teachers of the Year as identified by the National Teacher of the Year program. The interviews were coded and analyzed for themes that emphasize the importance of teacher morale, emotions, professional identity, professional growth, environmental factors, and the meaningful inclusion of teacher voice in the education reform debate. From the perspectives of the participants, six primary themes emerged, focusing on the emotional dynamics of teachers' lives, external views of the profession, school culture, professional growth, sense of efficacy, and teacher advocacy. The author proposes several suggestions for future research along with recommendations for policymakers and educators as they enact sustainable educational change sensitive to teacher morale, motivation, and professional identity.
