A qualitative analysis of the experiences of six Latino psychology graduate practicum students' experiences working at an inner city charter high school as a part of a grant funded by the U.S. Office of Minority Health to create a Family and Community Violence Prevention program. Their practicum utilized a combination of postmodern therapeutic interventions, tutoring, as well as traditional mentoring of inner city at-risk Latino youth. This approach resulted in positive outcomes for the youth. Mentoring experiences previously described in the literature traditionally examined mentors' roles that have positive outcomes for the youth. Six of the graduate psychology practicum students who took part in the program were interviewed about their mentoring experiences and how mentoring influenced their training as therapists. The findings were analyzed to determine how mentoring can be incorporated to enrich training experiences for psychology students. The impact of the students' involvement with the mentor program was different for every individual, which is illustrated through case examples. In addition to their individual experiences, there were essential themes found across each of their experiences. These common themes included: (a) the experience of creating a helping relationship with at-risk Latino youth, (b) developing therapeutic skills, and (c) increasing their understanding of cultural sensitivity. Implications for working with at risk youth and planning preventive interventions are discussed.
