The purpose of this study is to explore the artist's spiritual journey along the creative path. One of the avenues to becoming an effective artist is to have a strong spiritual connection to one's art, and a deep understanding of self Connection to self is not innate; it is achieved through a learned process that is paradoxically more important than the end result itself The artist cultivates her own identity along the creative path. As she establishes this identity she begins to infuse self-reflection into her work, forging a strong connection between Self and creative product.

520 $a There are highly suggestive parallels between the discipline of meditation that many (though not all artists) learn along the creative path and the Buddhist conception of meditation as a vehicle toward enlightenment. One might argue that the enlightenment experienced in artistic practice is similar to that of a Buddhist seeking nirvana. Here we will not refer to any one religion; what is most important is the artist's spiritual journey, regardless of cultural or geographical background. All sources mentioned in this study serve to bridge the gap between the "dinner table" conversation around creative spirituality and academic writing about the same. This study will examine the reflection and evolution of Self, the acceptance of the aleatory, and the moment where flow consumes the artist. All of these factors bring the artist to a state of enlightenment that is secondary to the meditative path taken to achieve it.
