Principles of communication and counseling in the financial planner-client relationship include concepts such as financial planners creating rapport, recognizing resistance, providing effective counseling, showing empathy, having self-awareness, understanding nonverbal behaviors, and creating effective questions with their clients. Prior research on communication and counseling demonstrated the importance of trust in the financial planner-client relationship. Previous studies have found that social style profiles play a significant role in affecting communication concepts in relationships and that social styles that most closely resemble our own tend to create the least discomfort and styles that differ most from our own create tension. Studies have shown a relationship between social style and likability and accepting advice. However, the effects matching and mismatching social styles have on professional-client relationships are not understood. The purpose of this quasi-experimental quantitative study was to investigate how matched and mismatched social style profiles relate to communication and counseling in the financial planner-client relationship. This study used data collected through surveys sent to the clients of financial planners. The social styles of the financial planner and corresponding client were assessed first, and whether the client has a match or mismatch with his/her financial planner's social style was the independent variable. Dependent variables were the client's perception of the financial planner's communication skills, counseling skills, level of trust in the financial planner, likability of the financial planner, and the willingness of a client to accept his/her financial planner's advice and were analyzed through the use of a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results of the MANOVA were significant, F = 2.62, p < 0.05 indicating significant differences between the levels of the independent variable (match vs. mismatch of social style) and any of the dependent variables. A follow-up one-way ANOVA test found no statistical significance in relation to a match and mismatch of social style and the dependent variables communication, counseling, trustworthy and acceptance of advice. A significant difference was found between a match and mismatch of social style and the dependent variable likability (F = 8.93, p = 0.003). Based on this significant relationship between likability and a match vs. a mismatch of social style, it is recommended that future research be conducted to identify additional significant relationships between these variables.
