The purpose of this study was to investigate how executive coaches implement theoretical coaching approaches in their regular practice as demonstrated by how they frame and respond to a standardized hypothetical coaching situation. This sort of research was important to the field of executive coaching because the scholarly literature on what coaches were actually doing in their practice was lacking a depth of scholarship and breadth that other helping professions enjoy.

Eight practicing executive coaches were asked to explain the coaching approach they would take with a hypothetical client. They also described the outcomes they hoped to see. Their responses to a long answer questionnaire were interpreted using the hermeneutical "directed textual content analysis" methodology. Then, each participant was interviewed in order to verify and nuance the researcher's interpretations.

The results of the research yielded eight unique approach/outcome characterization documents that outlined the theory and techniques used by each of the participants. The predominant coaching approach is the goal-based or solution based model. Other theoretical approaches often integrate within the goal-based model serving as the structure for coaching sessions. The research also revealed that coaches greatly vary in the way they (1) frame the 11 core competencies of the International Coaching Federation, (2) engage in facilitational verses instructional methods, (3) self-modulate their style to accommodate clients, (4) manage action planning with their clients, and (5) use assessment instruments. A final observation notes that many of the intended outcomes of coaching mirror the techniques of coaching, leaving the impressions that the medium of coaching is often the message of coaching.

The final chapter discussed future research and current coaching issues. In particular, the chapter advocates an increase of psychological coaching theory to be included in coach training.
