This generic qualitative study explored the physical disability (spinal cord injury or limb amputation) on African American male's perception of their body image, self-esteem, and sexuality. A generic qualitative research design involving in-depth, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were utilized. A purposive sample was employed with a minimum target population sample size of 10 African American men between the ages of 21 and 55 who have a physical disability of spinal cord injury or limb amputation. Data collection took place in a rural Georgia area. Participants revealed information about their attitudes and beliefs and how a physical disability was experience within their lives. A generic qualitative approach was applied to this study allowing an empathetic understanding of the everyday lived experience. The implications of this study helped in addressing the issues of African American men with disabilities. The implications also added tot he richness of perspectives on the disability experience. Findings from the study revealed that African American men perceptions of their body image, self-esteem, and sexuality confirm the premises of the social model theory by illuminating how the social environment effect the self-perceptions of individuals with disabilities. Findings also revealed that it takes time for adults who acquire a disability to learn to acknowledge, accept and adjust tot he physical limitations of that disability. It is important that researchers and practitioners be aware of the concerns of African American men with a physical disability in regard to body image, self-esteem, and sexuality. It is essential that more research is conducted and should be a major consideration when working with this specific population.
